New Words And Phrases

I've always loved the English language, regardless of its learning difficulties, agonizing inconsistencies and annoying uses.

Still, it opens up avenues of vocalization and expression like no other tongue.

This week I learned a few new words.

They're not words you can readily look up in a dictionary, mind you, but they detail actions or feelings into succinct definitions which make perfect sense.

Feel free to add them to your lexicon as you see fit.

Crouchy: A state of becoming a full-fledged grouch but not quite there yet; somewhere between the levels of crotchety and grouchy

Bakupauphamy: Another state of being in approaching a level where the sarcasm slowly turns annoying, indicative of when a response contains or suggests the following - "You know what? You better back up off of me or things could get ugly ..." - where a person has reached or is in purview of bakopauphamy

The Beautiful People

Per my daughter, they're not only beautiful and weird, but they're obviously a savvy bunch as well.

"Although a lot of beautiful, weird people
bought enough food to last them 'til February,
it lasted them 'til March."

(May I just state for the record my youngest daughter has her father's wit? Thank you .....)

But wait! In case you missed previous entries, there are more: Wordsmithery, Wordsmithery II and Wordsmithery III
.

Side Note: The term "beautiful people" does not apply to those who might reside in Washington D.C. Because we all know there are no beautiful people there. (Rupe has this on good, solid authority.)

Wordsmithery, Part III

You've seen a few before ..... here and here.

Well, yet another writing assignment from my youngest daughter - for your dining and dancing pleasure:

Reed

Caring, kind and shy

Sibling of

Ryne, Riley

Lover of

Dogs, nature and horses

Who feels

Loved, safe and happy

Who needs

Understanding, generosity and friendship

Who gives

Kindness, love and friendship

Who fears

Earthquakes, spiders and heights

Who would like to see

Ant's point of view, Heaven and New York

Seriously ... where does she get this stuff ... ?!?!?

She's worried about playing her computer games ... reading her books ... watching her programs ... how long she's away from Bob The Dog ... bugging her sister ...

... and then something like this pops up?

You gotta love it .....

Wordsmithery, Part II

I blogged about my daughter's writings here previously.

So, how 'bout a sequel? Sounds good to me.

I stated then I wished I could write as well as she could. And I stand by that statement.

For your consideration and
without further ado once more:

    - I was worried because I left my school agenda at home.

    - After I said farewell to my friends, I endured the long trip home.

    - We raised a large crop of cornfield which is next to the pond.

    - Come and see the wide and beautiful canyon.

    - I escaped from the huge smoke of fire but the firemen had to save my mom's life.

    - The dark mysterious giant got hurt in the morning.

    - When Joe was doing his chores, he found a crack on the wall.

    - It's an hour away before school ends.

    - At school they had a lesson about Thanksgiving.

    - At art class, we painted clay and used a needle to sew scraps together.

    - My mom said "Don't write on the kitchen table."

    - My ancestors were delighted when I made them a pie.

    - After I ate a crispy cookie, I went to play my harmonica.

    - I can't lie to my mother because she is my elder.

Of this batch, I have a few favorites I can't choose between:

    - The tornado was about to hit a third grader, but everyone scurried all about.

    - The heroic officer was talking with his mouth full.

    - Have you heard or ever seen the impossible solar system?

Wordsmithery

My daughter. My seven year old daughter.

She’s in 3rd grade .... and 3rd grade is a heckuva big leap from 2nd grade, let me tell you.

There’s already been frustration, tears, doubt and anger over assignments. There’s been questions galore over why there’s “so much homework!” in 3rd grade. There’s been astonishment at the fact the “times tables” need to be learned. (However, when I showed her a trick about the “9's”, her eyes lit up like a Times Square on a Saturday night.)

Over the course of a month of weeks, mathematics has become simultaneously harder and easier. We’ve seen jaw-dropping progress in her reading and comprehension. And her ability to "step it up" is coming in leaps and bounds.

Rupe’s proudest moment thus far, however, is her English.

Rupe shares some of his daughter's sentences pieced together from vocabulary word assignments garnered over the course of the last few weeks. Rupe’s picked out some that he's particularly enjoyed when they've been read aloud - by Rupe's daughter, no less.

Awed and jealous at the same time, Rupe wishes he could write this well. The fact these example sentences are put together in such unique and expressive ways is testament to Rupe’s youngest daughter being - indeed and in fact - of his loins. (Yes, I know. My “proud parentage” is showing. Deal with it.)

And now, without further ado, please enjoy:

    - There was a small town law.

    - I had to save a life and escape.

    - There was a note formed like a cube.

    - On Third Street, there was a hard tornado.

    - I had luck on the hunt because I won.

    - I smell something unusual.

    - There was a giant statue in the morning.

    - The directions say north, then I got into a situation.

    - Her giant, dark work hurt her hand.

And Rupe's favorite:

    - She turned, it was dark, then it was clear.
